Pitt PACC Public Lecture: Chris Quigg (Fermilab)
September 12, 2024 - 4:00pm
Postcards from the Particle Frontier
How scientists explore the universe, establish new laws of nature, and confront a dazzling array of new questions.
Chris Quigg is a Distinguished Scientist Emeritus at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. His research spans many topics in particle physics, from heavy quarks through cosmic neutrinos. His work on electroweak symmetry breaking and supercollider physics, which was recognized by the 2011 J. J. Sakurai Prize of the American Physical Society for outstanding achievement in particle theory, charted the course for exploration at Fermilab’s Tevatron and CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. His new book, Grace in All Simplicity, with co-author Robert Cahn, narrates the saga of how scientists have prospected for some of Nature’s most tightly held secrets, the basic constituents of matter and the fundamental forces that rule them. It is a thrilling voyage filled with improbable discoveries and the extraordinary community of people who make them.
