Research Scholarship Awards

Summer 2019

 

The Department of Physics and Astronomy has received funding from the Pennsylvania Space Grant Consortium to support undergraduate research.  The goal of the NASA Space Grant program is to encourage students to enter STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields.  Any STEM topic will be considered, but preference will be given to research that is directly related to astronomy or space physics.  Preference will also be given to qualified women and minority candidates and to candidates who have not received one of these scholarships in the recent past.

 

Three or more undergraduates will be supported for 10 weeks during the summer of 2019 starting Monday, May 20th and ending Friday, July 26th.  Students who receive these scholarships will be expected to work fulltime on a research project directed by a faculty mentor.  These students will also be required to participate in the Duquesne University Ethics Forum (late June) and to present their findings publicly at the Duquesne Symposium for Undergraduate Research (late July).  Please note that only U.S. Citizens are eligible to receive one of these awards.

 

Here are the steps to apply for a scholarship:

 

  1. Find a faculty member within your department who is willing to be your research mentor.
  2. Work out a research plan with this faculty member and write a brief summary of this plan.  This summary should be at least one or two paragraphs in length and no longer than one or two pages.
  3. Ask your faculty mentor to write and send a letter of recommendation.
  4. Send an academic transcript (official or unofficial).

 

The deadline for the summer 2019 applications is Monday, April 29th, 2019. 

 

The application materials should include:

 

  1. A research plan (be sure to include your name, department and email address).
  2. A letter of recommendation from your faculty mentor.
  3. A transcript (official or unofficial).
