About “Fabric of Being”
Fabric of Being is a tapestry inspired by Dr. Rachel Bezanson’s work with her UNCOVER (Ultra-deep NIRCam and NIRSpec Observations Before the Epoch of Reionization) team, an international project using the new James Webb Space Telescope. Remaining true to its name, UNCOVER generates a map of the Universe by making pictures. I decided to play with the unfinished nature of the map, as it is still developing, to visualize the vastness of the Universe. FABRIC OF BEING demonstrates a connection between Dr. Bezanson’s process of generating images to complete a cosmic map and the active practice of artistic creation—sewing, embroidery, and weaving. The piece enters multiple artistic practices, including embroidery, quilting, painting, and creating cyanotypes, to express the vibrant and diverse nature of the Universe and its galaxies.
