Faculty Position in Astrophysics or Experimental High Energy Physics With Machine Learning

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a new faculty member in astrophysics or high energy physics, with a focus on individuals who apply machine learning and related computational methods as tools in their research. This position is part of an interdisciplinary initiative within the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences to create a community of data science experts who will share new techniques with each other and disseminate them throughout their home departments. This tenure-stream position will be at the Assistant Professor level, starting on or after September 1, 2019, subject to budgetary approval.
We are seeking candidates who will complement and extend the Department’s research strengths in astrophysical surveys, theoretical cosmology, extragalactic astronomy, and collider and neutrino experiments. The Department is a member of the LSST Corporation and the Simons Observatory and participates in the ACT, DESI, SDSS, and Subaru PFS projects, as well as the ATLAS Experiment at the LHC, the Belle-II Experiment at KEK, and a number of neutrino experiments including NOvA, DUNE, MicroBooNE, NA61/SHINE, MINERvA, and T2K.
Successful candidates should have a demonstrated record of research success employing machine learning and related techniques, a vision for their future research program, and potential for a high degree of teaching effectiveness at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. They should be able to reach out to other members of our Department and connect with the broader scientific community within Pittsburgh. Any appointment will be associated with the Pittsburgh Particle Physics, Astrophysics, and Cosmology Center (PITT PACC) as well as with the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The University’s Center for Research Computing provides free access to leading edge computational technology with hundreds of nodes and thousands of cores supporting MPI, SMP, HTC, and GPU computing (see http://crc.pitt.edu for details).
