Outflows at Exascale: Simulating Galactic Winds on the World’s Fastest Supercomputers

Galactic winds — outflows of mass, momentum, and energy from star-forming galaxies — are a critical component in theories of galaxy evolution. Although their existence is well-established observationally, and their importance is widely acknowledged theoretically, a complete physical picture of winds has remained elusive. In this talk, I will explain the challenges we face in understanding winds, and the work my group is pursuing to reveal the nature of these complex systems. In particular, I will focus on our approach to modeling galactic outflows via GPU-accelerated hydrodynamics simulations on the world’s fastest supercomputers.
